Obituary For Apostle Barbara Jordan Williams

Chesapeake-With sincere compassion and concern, Fitchett-Mann Funerals Services stands hand in hand with the relatives of Apostle Barbara Jordan Williams as they prepare to celebrate her lasting legacy.

Apostle Barbara “Bibbie” Jordan-Williams was born on May 17,1945 in Norfolk County, VA to the late John and Emma Jordan. This was just before World War II ended! Barbara, better known as, Bibbie, was the first girl born into the family who enjoyed spending time with her brothers John (Mook) and Elliott (Lil Man). They protected their sister, who was the only girl and received everything she wanted. “Bibbie’s” parents and grandmother, Bertha, put her first and gave her the best in clothing, education, and social activities. As a very serious child, “Bibbie” would observe her surroundings and people, often covering her mother’s mouth if she laughed too loudly. Apostle Barbara often daydreamed of becoming a famous Hollywood actress while playing with her brother Elliott (Lil Man) as he jumped off their roof into leaves or played cowboys and Indians. There was a pivotal figure in her family, Elder Eugene Gay, that she would observe and ultimately follow in his footsteps being holy and sanctified. Elder Eugene Gay strictly adhered to the Bible and its precepts. This lineage, which permeated “Bibbie’s” life, was an enormous influence on her and shaped her personality and spiritual walk. She crossed racial lines and was able to relate to people from various backgrounds.

Apostle Barbara Jordan-Williams was a trailblazer, a phenomenal dancer, and a woman of “firsts”. She always had high expectations and expensive taste. Apostle Barbara was instrumental in helping her mother, aunt Lessie, and Rebecca Williams organize the African-American farming families in Butts Station to vote for the first time in their lives. Colon Hall merged South Norfolk and Norfolk County to create Chesapeake. African-American working class families supporting and working for Colon Hall cast their vote for the first time in 1962, making history! Colon Hall was sworn in on January 1, 1963 due to the work of the elders and Apostle Barbara.

Apostle Barbara’s roots were deeply embedded in tradition and family. She was reared by a very strong, courageous father and a kind, gentle mother. “Bibbie” developed her personality taking on traits from both parents. Strength and boldness from her father coupled with a kind, giving heart from her mother.

Growing up in Chesapeake, VA, “Bibbie” was educated in the Norfolk County (know Chesapeake Public School system) and graduated from Crestwood High School in 1963. Crestwood High School was the only African-American school in Chesapeake. The Teachers and staff required excellence in all facets of school life. In high school, she participated in multiple extra-curricular activities to include The Library Club, The Pyramid Club (to prep students for Delta Sigma Theta Sorority), and the marching band. While in the marching band, she became the first female Drum Major for Crestwood High School and won Best Dancer in the senior superlatives. She was also nominated for Best Dressed but could only win one category. After graduation, “Bibbie” matriculated to Elizabeth City State University majoring in Education. She was the first to attend college and often talked about how her brother John “Mook” paid her tuition as he was extremely proud of her. Years later, in her late 60’s, Apostle Barbara Jordan-Williams completed her education at Norfolk State University and obtained a degree in Psychology. She was the most senior student in her class. Her cumulative education and experience speak volumes about her dedication and determination to set a good example and do God’s work!

Having a zest for life and social interaction, “Bibbie” began working in Downtown Norfolk at Smith and Welton while in her early 20’s. She was one of the first African-Americans to work as a Clothier and Make-up Artist. Years prior, she and her grandmother, Bertha used to travel from Chesapeake to Downtown Norfolk dressed in their best, carrying a parasol. “Bibbie” enjoyed fine dining and would only eat at restaurants that offered white glove service. After working with Smith and Welton, “Bibbie” became a model participating in runway shows, The Norma Fox Modeling Agency, and advertisements. Having a keen interest in fashion, “Bibbie” excelled in her career at RICES, Ann Gellner, Willner’s Boutique, and LaVogue.

At the age of 22, “Bibbie” married Melvin Hoggard Williams. They honeymooned in Hawaii, traveled to Texas, and were ultimately stationed in California. After being married for over seven years, they had a baby girl, Tiffany! Apostle Barbara and Tiffany had a close mother-daughter relationship that many complimented.

Apostle Barbara Jordan-Williams began serving the Lord and never looked back! She was ordained by Pastor Sudie Woodard and began evangelizing and winning souls. She ministered to the wealthy who didn’t feel that they needed the Lord due to their money and intellect as well as, those who were struggling financially. Apostle Barbara Jordan-Williams served as the Pastor of Go Ye Church of Deliverance for over 15 years. She won souls, cast out demons, taught the Word, and gave love to those who had not experienced it. Apostle Barbara Jordan-Williams also had the gift of prophecy and spoke “thus saith the Lord” when the spirit gave utterance. Many lives were impacted by Apostle Barbara-Jordan Williams and her ability to speak the truth, correct, rebuke, and love.

Apostle Barbara Jordan-Williams traveled often. She traveled to Israel four times and desired to move there. She also traveled to London, Kenya, and many states within the U.S.

On Friday, September 13, 2024, this faithful soldier for the Lord entered the joy of the Lord and joined the great church triumphant! Apostle Barbara Jordan-Williams was preceded in death by her parents, John and Emma Jordan; her siblings Willie Grimes, Dorothy Parker, John Jordan, Elliott Jordan, and Wayne Lee Jordan. She leaves to cherish her memory, her daughter Tiffany (Dexter), grandchildren Greyson, Lauryn, Jayden, and Jordan; sisters Cora Cocoa Dunston, Brenda Holmes, and Cynthia Nixon; Her niece, Chayne Johnson cared for her in many ways and provided a listening ear at any time while also ensuring her safety utilizing hi-tech products; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives, and friends, all contributed in different ways.

…You lived life without me, but I have never lived life without you, until now- your daughter, Tiffany

A very special thank you to Apostle Barbara Jordan-Williams’ dear friends Miss Henrietta Vann and Mr. Horace Rountree. They were the epitome of “a friend loveth at all times”.

Apostle Barbara Jordan-Williams will be missed. She was a great mother, the best grandmother you could ask for, an adventurous leader, elegant woman filled with beauty and grace, a bold soldier, and a mighty woman of God.

A Triumphant Celebration of Life will be held 11:00 am Saturday; October 5, 2024 at St. Luke AME Church; Chesapeake, VA. Viewing of her earthly remains will be 1 hour prior to service. It will be an adjustment for Apostle Williams's family and friends not being able to spend time with her any longer while here. However, the silver lining is just as the songwriter penned, “When we all get to Heaven, what a day of rejoicing that will be, when we all see Jesus we will sing and shout the victory.”

Burial will be in the church cemetery. It is in this place that her physical temple will remain until time is called into eternity and those who are sleep in Christ will rise first to meet Him in the air.

Apostle Barbara, thank you for sharing your loving spirit with me even though you were transitioning to be with our Lord and Savior. Thank you for your many prayers for my family. I will always remember those late night telephone conversations and prayers with you,Cocoa,Chayne and me as you lay in your bed in the hospital and in your beautiful home. You were a wonderful Mother to Tiffany. There was no doubt how much you LOVED her. Your Grandchildren could not have had a more Loving Grandmother. Your remarkable Legacy will live on in the hearts of those like Bishop Dr. Ronald White who said you were his Religious Inspiration. Reuniting with him via a telephone call was a Godsend. Although your physical presence will be missed, your spiritual presence will be with us always. Love You Forever. Rest in Peace. Gwendolyn Dupree Bailey .
